S&S was the idea of J. A. Smith, Jr., "Smitty", a Macon, Georgia restaurateur of renown, known for innovative operating methods and quality service. The first S&S Cafeteria opened in Columbus, Georgia, in 1936, and the company has continued to grow into the Smith & Sons corporation of today. In 1949, the Smith family was among the first to establish a cooperative buying and distribution program for a chain of food service establishments. The creation of State Wholesale Food the central purchasing arm of the company, assured the highest quality ingredients for the most efficient cost. Today that division operates out of a modern warehouse/distribution hub centrally located. Again setting standards for the industry, S&S Food Administrators was created in 1957. With the cafeterias operating successfully, and with power buying efficiency available through State Wholesale, corporate management began offering food service management to hospitals, nursing homes, businesses, industries and educational accounts. Since its inception, S&S Food Administrators has added service to educational camps and vending management. Efficiencies in the area of dietary healthcare needs have also been expanded. To provide the highest level of quality food for the best value has been a precept of S&S throughout our six decade history in food service. No matter how technology and business trends have changed, that commitment to quality and a conservative business attitude has kept Smith & Sons Foods, Inc., a vital, prosperous food service company.
